This photograph of one of the overpasses near Oklahoma City that sustained a direct hit during the tornadoes of May 3, 1999, shows a large piece of
metal wrapped around the top of the support column. The picture is from a report by the National Weather Service on the inadvisability of seeking safety under highway overpasses in severe weather. Winds at the level of the
overpass where people were huddled (on the left of this photograph) were
strong enough to hurl metal debris with this kind of power. One person seeking shelter beneath this overpass was killed by such debris, and others there were seriously injured.
